What is the 4 day Ha Giang Loop?

The Ha Giang Loop is a circular motorbike journey through Vietnam’s northernmost province. The terrain is dramatic and rugged with limestone mountains, deep canyons and winding roads that overlook the Nho Que River.

4 day ha giang loop
Ha Giang Loop has retained its natural beauty over the years

A 4 day loop allows you to see more remote areas such as Du Gia and smaller ethnic communities of Tay, Hmong, Red Dao and Nung. Compared to doing Ha Giang in 2 or 3 days, you will have more time to enjoy the landscapes, visit families, explore hidden waterfalls and relax without rushing.

Most riders choose between a self-ride or an easy rider (local driver). Both options are available on our VBH tours.

Interesting fact:

Ha Giang Province is home to around 700,000 people, many from ethnic communities such as the Tay, Dao and Hmong. These groups continue to preserve their traditional way of life, which is a big reason why the Ha Giang Loop still feels natural and untouched today.

When you travel through the region, you get the chance to meet local families, see daily village life and connect with the landscapes in a way that feels real and meaningful.

Ha Giang Loop map 4 Days (route overview)

  • Day 1: Ha Giang → Du Gia
  • Day 2: Du Gia → Ma Pi Leng Pass → Dong Van
  • Day 3: Dong Van → Yen Minh → Ha Giang City

This route gives you a balanced mix of mountain passes, canyons, ethnic villages and scenic viewpoints, making it one of the most complete ways to experience the loop.

Ha Giang Loop 4 day itinerary (day-by-day)

Night 1 – Hanoi to Ha Giang

Your adventure begins in Hanoi. You can choose either the D-car limousine in the late afternoon or the night bus at 10:00 PM. Both options take you directly to Ha Giang City.

The D-car arrives around 9:30 PM so you can check in and rest, while the night bus gets in early the next morning. This night sets you up for a full first day on the loop.

Day 1 – Ha Giang → Du Gia (115 km)

The loop officially begins after breakfast and a short safety briefing from your guide. Once you hit the road, the scenery opens up immediately with mountain views, small villages and quiet backroads.

You will stop for lunch in a peaceful spring-fed village and, if the weather is warm, enjoy a refreshing swim. In the afternoon you continue toward Du Gia, a beautiful valley known for its relaxed vibe. Dinner is served at a family-run homestay where you stay for the night.

Day 2 – Du Gia → Ma Pi Leng Pass → Dong Van (120 km)

After breakfast in Du Gia, you follow a quiet road that only local residents use. This part of the loop shows real daily life in the mountains. You will see children walking to school, farmers tending rice terraces and small homes hidden in the valleys.

Your guide leads you through Red Dao and Nung communities. Sometimes the families here offer tea or simply smile and wave from their doorways. These interactions feel natural because this road is far from the main tourist crowd.

Lunch is served in a Tay valley. The host family cooks everything fresh and most ingredients come from their garden. Many travelers say this is one of the strongest meals of the entire loop.

After lunch, you visit a cave system that provides clean water to several nearby villages. It is cool and peaceful inside which makes it a nice short break before the main highlight of the day.

The Ma Pi Leng Pass is the most famous viewpoint of Ha Giang. The canyon drops sharply down to the Nho Que River and the mountains rise high above you. Your guide knows the safer photo stops and also the quieter viewpoints away from the busy parking area. These spots give you better angles and more room to enjoy the scenery.

You end the afternoon in Dong Van town. Your homestay is run by a Hmong family who prepares a warm dinner made from seasonal ingredients such as bamboo shoots, corn wine, grilled pork and fresh vegetables. The evening is relaxed with the group sharing stories at the table and enjoying the cool mountain air.

Day 3 – Dong Van → Yen Minh → Ha Giang City (140 km)

You can start the morning slowly or head out early to watch the sunrise near the China border. The light at this time of day makes the mountains glow and it is one of the quietest, most peaceful moments of the loop.

After breakfast, the ride continues through rugged rock formations and open valleys. This area is part of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, where fossils and unique geological layers can still be seen along the roadside. Your guide will point out a few interesting spots where the ancient rock formations are clearly visible.

Hmong King’s Palace - ha giang loop 4 days
Hmong King’s Palace

If time allows, you stop at the Hmong King’s Palace. This traditional compound is an important cultural site and offers a closer look at the history of the local Hmong community.

Lunch is served at one of the oldest restaurants in Ha Giang. The recipes are simple and traditional, and many ingredients come from surrounding farms.

Returning to Ha Giang City in the afternoon, you can relax at the hostel with a drink by the pool or by the fire when the evening gets cooler. Dinner is a barbecue shared with the group which makes this night one of the most social parts of the loop.

Day 4 – Local Villages → Hanoi

Your final morning on the loop starts calmly. You can go for a quick swim or simply enjoy fresh fruit and pancakes at the hostel before heading out.

The route today takes you to villages outside the main loop. These areas feel quieter and more traditional with stilt houses surrounded by rice paddies and clear natural streams flowing through the fields. It is a simple but very authentic part of Ha Giang that many travelers never see.

Lunch is either at the home of one of our easy riders or at a small BBQ spot by the water. This meal is often a highlight because it gives you a close look at how your guides and their families live in the mountains. Many guests describe this as the most memorable and emotional moment of the tour.

After lunch you return to the hostel for a quick shower and to pack your bags. The D-car departs around 4:00 PM and the night bus leaves at 10:00 PM.

You arrive back in Hanoi the same evening with the D-car or early the next morning with the night bus, marking the end of your four day Ha Giang adventure.

Best time to do the 4 day Ha Giang Loop tour

The best time to complete the Ha Giang Loop 4 days is from September to November. These months bring clear skies, cooler temperatures and dry roads which make the mountain passes easier and safer to ride. The views are at their best during this period, with wide visibility across the valleys and canyons.

Another good season is March to May. Spring brings warm weather and blooming flowers across the hillsides, especially the famous buckwheat blossoms that add soft pink and purple tones to the landscape. This season is great for photography and anyone who prefers lighter, comfortable temperatures.

You can ride the loop all year, but the rainy months from June to August can bring muddy sections and sudden showers. Winter from December to February is possible but can be very cold in higher areas like Dong Van and Meo Vac.

FAQs – Ha Giang Loop 4 Days tour

Is the 4 day Ha Giang Loop suitable for beginners?

Yes. If you are not confident driving a motorbike, you can choose the easy rider option where a local guide drives for you. This lets you enjoy the scenery without worrying about the roads.

Can I join the 4 day loop as a solo traveler?

Absolutely. Many travelers join the loop alone and end up making friends throughout the journey. The group setting makes the experience social and fun.

Do I need a motorbike license?

A license is helpful but not required if you choose the easy rider option. For self-riders, a license plus solid riding experience is strongly recommended because some sections are steep and narrow.

Is four days enough to explore Ha Giang?

Yes. Four days is the ideal pace because you cover all major highlights, visit quieter villages and still have enough time to enjoy swimming spots, photo stops and cultural experiences.
